Class description: Students work on advanced projects using Adobe Photoshop tocreate portfolio pieces. Topics include retouching, color correcting, Photo CD, and working with service bureaus. Students will learn to produce and optimize images for the World Wide Web. Current professional digital work is examined, with special emphasis on legal and ethical issues. Prerequisite: PHOT 3190.

We will be using the Macintosh platform in class, but students with Windows familiarity are welcome. Cross-platform questions are encouraged, and issues are addressed.

Class attendance is very important in this course. Your participation (especially in discussions) and attendance are a large part of your grade -- make sure both are exceptional. Written assignments and class presentations must be completed on schedule. What the grades mean...

What we're doing and when:

Week 1 (8/25 & 27). Introductions; hardware (including the Wacom tablet), operating systems, and software. Participating in the Photoshop listserv. (If you are new to on-line discussion groups, read the "rules of the road" before you jump in!)

Week 2 (9/3). What your Class Presentations are about; using Adobe Photoshop 4.0.

Week 3 (9/8 & 10). Permanence, care and handling of CDs; what to expect in the DVD format; the CD as coffee table book (From Alice to Ocean); crossing computer platforms; Photoshop 4.0 continued. Using keyboard shortcuts.

Week 4 (9/15 & 17).. Class presentations; the CD, the Internet and the "stock" market; Photoshop 4.0 continued.

Week 5 (9/22 & 24). Scanning using Kodak RFS 3570 and Epson 1200C flatbed scanner; things you need to know about reproduction. Issues in scanning.

Week 6 (9/29 & 10/1). CD as multimedia portfolio (MPPA Pictures of the Year); the consumer quality digital camera (Apple QuickTake, Kodak DC 120 digital camera); Photoshop 4.0 continued.

Week 7 (10/6). Photo CD as portfolio (Now You Can); class presentations.
NB: 10/8 is Webster's Community Service Day. No class today so you can participate.

Week 8 (10/13 & 15). .Discussion and assignment of individual projects; class presentations; ethical and legal issues with special regard to digital imaging.

Fall Break

Week 9 (10/27 & 29). Student presentations of project proposals; initial work on projects; adding extras to Photoshop, including assorted filters and plug-ins, a free bevel plug-in

Week 10 (11/3 & 5). Photography on the Internet; optimizing images for the web, including Photoshop web tutorials and general HTML resources ; class presentations; work on projects.

Week 11(11/10 & 12). Restoration & retouching; work on projects.

Week 12 (11/17 & 19). Class presentations; work on projects; other imaging programs.

Week 13 (11/24 & 26). Work on projects; work with Paintshop Pro.

Week 14 (12/1 & 3). Class presentations; work on projects; work with other software.

Week 15 (12/8 & 10). Class presentations of final projects.

Week 16. (12/15). Final exam (exact time to be announced).
