Chicoineau traces the break up of the Nauvoo community, the movement of the "minority" group to St. Louis, the death of Etienne Cabet (and his burial in St. Louis), and the early days of the community in Cheltenham. Very useful material not available elsewhere in English.
Well researched and written section on the American Icarians. Pages 374-377 forcus explicitly on the Cheltenham Icarians. Quite useful.
The chapter on the Icarians covers the whole movement. However, there is a section on Cheltenham Icarians. However, it seems derived from William Alfred Hinds' book.
As the title suggests, Meritz, name of the president of the huge firm in St. Louis, was a descendant of one of the Cheltenham Icarians. The version of the article in the CONTRIBUTIONS volume has an extensive bibliography of materials on the Cheltenham Icarians.
This study mentions all the U.S. communities, but focuses its study on the organization at Nauvoo, Illinois. Lots of useful detail about day to day life and living.
The contents of the first article are just as the title says. The census is a full list of all the people who were registered in the 1960 United States Census and were living in the Cheltenham community. It includes nationality and place of birth, most of them from France or Switzerland.
Less detailed aboutthe Cheltenham Icarians than Hinds' later book, but seems to have influenced Hines a great deal. Useful material on the Cheltenham group. Pages 67-72. Can be see in full on in the Icarian history section. I have only a xerox copy of this work in my library
