MINUTES OF THE DOGTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY
March 8, 2014

CALL TO ORDER – President John Corbett called the meeting to order at 10:10 a.m. at The Corner Cup Breakfast and Brunch Restaurant at 1221 Tamm Avenue, St. Louis, MO. Seven members were in attendance; Bob Corbett, John Corbett, Tom Haller, Bill Miller, Gerry Miller, Carol Nemeth, Sally Sharamitaro along with guest; Gail Hook.

Meeting Minutes - A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of the last meeting which was an experimental online/email meeting. The meeting was held in October 2013. The motion passed and the minutes were approved.

Treasurer’s Report – Bob Corbett presented the most current treasurer’s report. The DHS has an ending bank balance as of January 31, 2014 of $8,615.33. A motion was made and seconded to approve the treasurer’s report. A vote was taken, the motion passed and the treasurer’s report was approved.

CURRENT BUSINESS - PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Memorial Day Paver Project – John informed the members that a dedication will be held on May 25, 2014, which as usual, is the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. There are 15 new pavers as of this date to be dedicated, with a deadline for this year’s applications being April 15, 2014.

A motion was made that a special paver be dedicated to Frank Siebert, for his contribution to the Dogtown neighborhood. That contribution being his management of the Community Garden on lower Tamm Avenue. A vote was taken and the motion passed and the special paver was approved.

Street Musicians Festival 2014 – John announced that the 2014 Festival will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014. This year the festival will honor the musical career of the late Irene Javonovic. Her daughter will attend, and she has agreed to provide historical information and photographs for the dedication.

There will be two stages this year, which John says will increase the time (and tips?) of each of the performers/groups. So far the reaction to this change by the musicians has been positive. The second stage will be erected further south on Tamm.

Five musicians will be scheduled for each set, and will be introduced at one of these two stages.

The entertainment will begin at noon, then at 1:00 pm the first sets of musicians will be introduced, each will play one song before they move to their assigned stations. The other sets will follow as per the 2014 schedule.

On the same date the 2014 Sustainability and Neighborhood Expo will be held.

Historian/Archivist – - DHS Historian Bob Corbett discussed the four essays he plans to share with the Dogtown History Email Group.

The first two essays were centered on the History of the St. Patrick’s Day Parades in Dogtown, and on Father Patrick J. O’Connor. So many Dogtowners wrote to say how much they enjoyed the essays and even wanted to share some of their own memories, that Bob was encouraged to share more essays.

His next two essays will be focused on the 1904 World’s Fair and the "naming" of Dogtown.

Tom Haller mentioned the newest information that has been documented on various websites as to how Dogtown got its name. And he is among those looking forward to the time when the Seamus McDaniels menu is updated. It seems true that the false stories will continue to be passed along with every “new” customer who reads it for the first time.

GOOD OF THE ORDER/NEW BUSINESS –

Community Grocery Store in Dogtown - There was discussion regarding a survey taken by the Sustainability Expo Folks about what Dogtowners want in their neighborhood. The findings show that a grocery store is on the top of the list.

There is a new group with plans to look into that possibility. Meetings are to be scheduled and notices will be distributed.

DHS Elections - Bob informed the members that there are DHS Board Members and Officers whose term limits have been fulfilled and their positions are open for election/re-election.

The meeting adjourned at 11:15 a.m. The next meeting will be June 2014 at 10:00am. An email will be sent to all list members announcing the meeting, date and location.

Respectfully submitted,
Sally Ryan Sharamitaro
