MINUTES OF THE DOGTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY
June 14, 2003
CALL TO ORDER
Dogtown Historical Society meeting was held on June 14, 2003 at
St. James The Greater Rectory.
Vice President John Corbett called the meeting to order at 10:02am with 10 people in attendance. Bob and John Corbett,Henry Herbst, Peggy Koch,Virginia Lopez, Bill and Gerry Miller, Sally Sharamitaro, Bill and Betty Vorbeck.
Nina Bryans was excused for personel reasons.
Minutes were read by Virginia Lopez and approved.
Bill Vorbeck with drew the motion.
Treasurers Report
Jim Glaser was absent. Sent email saying $2489.80 in the checking account.

Send letters to home owners.
- Speakers Report
Sally Sharamitaro reported the next lecture will be History Of St. James Parish to be held on June 22,2003 at 7pm To have an intermission halfway through talk,consider different set up for chairs,to have name tags for DHS officers and committee members, printing list of important dates of the parish with reference to DHS websites,also list of past preist.Refreshments and snacks will be served.
Flyers have been made with a picture of the Church on top. John Corbett will diistribute flyers to local business.
Next event will be September 21,2003 on Route 66. Speaker Jim Powell. Nina will try to contact Mr Powell. Will let us know when she hears from him.
- Logo Status
John Corbett is waiting the logo from a graphic designer which should be presented at the next meeting. It is to be a simple logo of circular shape with the letters DHS in the center and the name Dogtown Historical Society circling around the logo with 2002 at the bottom of the circle.
- Living History
Virginia Lopez reported on June 10,2003 Duke McVey and Nina Kassing Bryans interviewed Mary Kathleen McVey Murphy and her cousin,Bob McVey at” Harry’s West,” a restaurant in Ballwin.
Kay was born and raised in a house on SE corner of Tamm and Lloyd and Bob lived a few houses south on Tamm. Both graduated from St. James School Kay in 1938 and Bob in 1939. Kay was married to a famous, wellnown Dogtown athlete,
Babe Murphy who won scholarships to CBC and Notre Dame. (kay brought along pictures and newspaper articles that Duke will scan for our WebSite.)
Kay and Bob had many stories to relate about the 1930s and ‘40s-games they played; sense of community and extended family atmosphere,Forest Park,Soap Box Derby,WW11, Cook’s Field,and many entertaining stories about Father O’connor. Kay talked about the role of women in her family,and the difference her father,Charles McVey ,had in raising her sisters and brother. She also related her great fondness for her Grandfather and Grandmother Pahl, who lived with them on Tamm.
Everyone had a wonderful 21/2 hour interview, with lots of laughs and wonderful storytelling.

Tom Haller was not present. No report on signs or possible lecture on Forest Park Hiighlands,

Henry talked to som people in the Brews Association. Found the Alpen Brau sign had been painted in 1905
- Other Business
John Colombo interviewed recently for DHS Living History Project died on June 8.
He was 91 years old
