OLD BUSINESS

Bench Project - Bob reported that there are 6 new benches that have been installed and are awaiting plaques. He keeps a list of names of those interested in funding a bench, and is always on the lookout for locations.

The DHS now has 19 benches installed Feedback on them has been very positive. Many neighbors have been seen using the current benches, especially those at bus stops.

Bob has been working with Johnny Mac’s and new plaques should be available soon for the new benches.

Bob also informed the members that the Franz Park neighborhood is interested in having benches installed in their neighborhood.

Tom Haller heard that Rowe School Alumni are discussing funding a bench. Bob said he plans to send out an email to encourage all Dogtown alumni to gather together with their former classmates, pledge the amounts that they wish, and ultimately fund a bench for their school.

He suggested that if any of the neighborhood associations or church organizations are interested, and are successful in raising the funds necessary, that the DHS would be willing to order the benches and have them delivered to that church or association.

Ghost Sign Restoration Project – John explained to the members that in order to proceed with the second ghost sign project, the DHS needs to approve funds for both the painter, Lonnie Tettaton, and for the equipment that he will need to proceed with the restoration project.

No city permit is needed as permission has been granted by the building owner, and because this is considered repainting existing artwork. There are no wires that need to be moved or removed, so painting can start immediately after the funds are approved.

A discussion followed about the new ghost sign and the plans for the restoration. Also discussed was the wording for both the new plaque to be installed at this site and for the Alpen Brau plaque which has not yet been completed and/or approved.

A motion was made and seconded that the DHS approve payments of $1,800.00 for the painter, Lonnie Tettaton, and $500.00 for the high lift equipment, a total of $2,300.00. A vote was taken and the motion was passed and the funds approved.

Route 66 Signs – John is waiting to hear from the Route 66 folks about signs.

NEW BUSINESS

Dogtown Street Banners – The new designs for the Dogtown street banners will be determined by the neighborhood associations, and each will have a design and/or a replica and the name of that particular area in Dogtown. Each banner will also include the words: Historic Dogtown, established 1876.

Bill Miller, Chairman of the Century Home Committee, added that an Ellendale neighbor showed interest in having Dogtown banners on Famous Avenue. Seems that there are more historical homes there than on any other street in Dogtown.

Possible future DHS events – John received a note from Dan McGuire with information on the city permit process for street performers. John will follow up.

Other - Gerry Miller wondered if any of the members would be interested in organizing Dogtown house tours. Discussion followed on the idea.

The meeting adjourned at 11:20 a.m. The next meeting will be Saturday, September 8, 2007, at 10:00 a.m., St. James Rectory, 6401 Wade Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63139
