MINUTES OF THE DOGTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY

July 13, 2002

The meeting of the Dogtown Historical Society was held on July 13 ,2002 at the home of John Corbett 6314 West Park Avenue. The meeting came to order at 1:10 pm. with 11 members in attendance. Nina Bryans, Bob Corbett, John Corbett, Jim Glaser, Henry Herbst, Virginia Lopez, Duke McVey, Kay Richard, Sally Sharamitaro, Bill Vorbeck and Jack Weaver.

Minutes were read by Virginia Lopez and were approved as read.

Treasurers Report. Jim Glaser reported a balance of $1036.04 in the treasury. $200.00 of which came from new members signed up at the St. James homecoming.

OLD BUSINESS

  1. Membership Dues: Ed Cody (excused absence) sent an email suggesting that, subject to section 501C3 of the Internal Revenue Rules and Regulations, we establish membership dues payable annually by January 31 of each year. Suggestion was approved.

  2. Living History: We have 11 interviews identified. The Dugan Sisters are scheduled for Monday, July 15 at John Corbett’s home. Nina Bryans and John Corbett will do the interview. Bill Vorbeck will take pictures.

  3. St James Centennial: Bob Corbett has met with the St. James group and reported that the first notice has been sent out regarding the September 7th Centennial Celebration; a second notice is on the way. Bob has been asked to write a short history of the school. Snacks and drinks will be available.

  4. People to People: Nina Bryans contacted Norma Swope Downey, John Rooney and Jim Ryan. Mrs. Downey is busy with other commitments at this time, but offered to help later. John Rooney, a lawyer, had lunch with us at Seamus McDaniels before the meeting. He had other commitments for the afternoon that prevented him from attending the July meeting, but he will be at our meeting in August. John has a lot of pictures , records and maps about Dogtown, which he brought to lunch.

  5. Store Windows and Logos: Lisa Wade has been working on a logo for the organization. She suggested cups, T-shirts, etc., as ways to raise money and advertise the organization. Bob Corbett asked someone to help Lisa in getting our material in store windows. Sally Sharamitaro volunteered.

  6. Route 66: Nina Bryans sent a note of thanks to Jim Powell for his article on Route 66 for our Web Site. She also invited him to speak at one of our future meeting.
NEW BUSINESS


  1. Speakers Series: Bob Corbett has been asked to speak at the Hi-Point meeting in August. Bob suggested we have a quarterly meeting with the public and have a speaker to help generate interest in the Dogtown Historical Society.

  2. School Education Project: Nina Bryans invited Tom Wade, a teacher at Hazelwood Central, to come to our meeting. Although he could not attend the meeting, he joined us for lunch at Seamus McDaniels during which he volunteered to form an education program with the school children from St. James to write essays on the history of Dogtown. We would award prizes for the best ones.

  3. Golf Tournament: Jack Weaver represented Pat’s Bar and & Grills Annual Golf Tournament, to be held in Forest Park on July 28,2002 at $75.00 per person. They pledged to make a donation to the Dogtown Historical Society.

  4. Century Homes: John Corbett will lead Bill Vorbeck in photographing home 100 years old are more. They also to plan to make plaques stating when the home was built, who lived there and whatever other information the homeowner might agree to have on the plaque. They have not decided on the material for the plaque.

  5. Carondelet Historical Society: This organization was formed 35 years ago. We are planning to get a group together to visit their Society.

  6. Publicity: It was suggested that permanent signs be made to advertise our meeting that would be placed throughout the neighborhood.

  7. Walk of Fame: John Corbett volunteered to chair a committee for the Walk Of Fame. Bob Corbett will develop a web site publishing all the messages that have been received so far offering suggestions, on how the project should be addressed. John will write a message to go out to the mailing list asking them to review the suggestions and make comments.

  8. Meeting Change: Henry Herbst made a motion to hold our meetings at 10:00 am rather than 1:00 pm Kay Richards seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Next meeting will be held August 10, 2002 at 10:00 am at John Corbett’s home

Meeting adjourned at 3:00 pm.

ACTION ITEMS:

  1. Bob Corbett will get in touch with Clayton Tamm Association to ask them if they would like to cosponsor his presentation about clay factories.

  2. Nina Bryans will set a meeting with Lisa Wade, Bob Corbett and the board to address in detail the Store Window Displays.

  3. John Corbett will compose message to be sent to mailing list requesting additional comments on the Walk of Fame.

  4. Bob Corbett will develop web Site for previous Walk of Fame suggestions.
