MINUTES OF THE DOGTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY
August 10, 2002
The meeting of the Dogtown Historical Society was held on August 10th,2002 at the home of John Corbett
6314 West Park Avenue.
The meeting came to order at 10 am with 12 members in attendance: Nina Bryans, Joe Bowman, Ed Cody, Bob Corbett,
John Corbett, Henry Herbst, Virginia Lopez, Bill Miller, Gerry Miller, Dominic Robinson, Betty Vorbeck,
Bill Vorbeck and Sally Sharamitaro.
Minutes were read by Virginia Lopez and were approved as read.
Treasurer Report -- Jim Glaser was absent -– no report.
OLD BUSINESS
- People to people responses gathered by Nina Kassing Bryans:
- Elaine Hart Westin graduated 1950 from St. James now lives in Glenn Carbon, Illinois
- George L. Travis attended Roe School and now lives in Fenton, Missouri
- Charles Fleming attended Dewey School and now lives in Fenton, Missouri
- Dr. Joe Williams graduated from St. James in 1957. He lives in St. Louis, Missouri.
- Lliving History
- The Duggan Sisters were interviewed on July 15, 2002.
- Leora Emmerich, Zelma Rowe, Helen Durbin and Virginia Lopez were interviewed on July 30. 2003 regarding their part in quilting at St. James.
- On August 6th,2002 Nina Bryans and John Corbett came to St. James rectory and interviewed the ladies who were quilting. They also photographed some of the quilts that will be used in the annual Quilt Social scheduled for August 18th, 2002.
- Store Windows
Nina Bryans and John and Bob Corbett met with Lisa Wade in the Fire Fighters office to discuss displays to be put in Lehman’s Hardware on Tamm Avenue. Lisa requested money to cover printing of sign’s.
Our logo is currently being printed.
- Speaker’s Series
Nina Bryans met with Father Johnston, pastor of St. James Church, and briefed him on the purpose of The Dogtown Historical Society (DHS) and the projects that are underway. Father gave permission for the use of St. James hall. He was interested in all the projects, especially the Speaker’s Series and the Education Project with the 7th and 8th grade students.
- Team Grant
John Corbett and Nina Bryans met with Dean Meredith, President of the Clayton Tamm Association, on July 30th.2002 to discuss working together on projects. DHS has an opportunity to apply for a grant.
- St. James Centennial
St. James School will be 100 years old in September 2002. Bob Corbett wrote a short history on St. James School which the alumni are having printed to give out at the Centennial Celebration on September 7th.
There will be refreshments, beer ,soda and ongoing activities. Bob Corbett will be set up in the cafeteria with pictures of the graduating classes from 1904 to the present day. He will bring his scanner to scan pictures and take names of people who would like to have a picture sent to them later.
- Dogtown Calendar
DHS would like to start the calendar on March 17th. Henry Herbst started a list for the calendar downlaoded from the Home Page. We are looking for someone to take over the calendar project.
NEW BUSINESS
- Ed Cody, Bob Corbett and Henry Herbst are forming a committee to research college art students who might paint and restore signs.
- Henry Herbst with the help of Duke McVey, of Jefferson City, Missouri has done a lot of work on the history of the Taylor City Belt Line. Through access to the state archives, he found the original corporate papers of the railroad.
Next meeting will be held September 14, 2002 at 10:00 am at John Corbett’s home
