CALL TO ORDER: Vice President Virginia Lopez, in the absence of President John Corbett who is recovering from an automobile accident, called the meeting of The Dogtown Historical Society (DHS) to order at 10:10 a.m. at the St. James Rectory. Twelve people were in attendance: Nina Bryans, Bob Corbett, Didi Gardner, JoAnn Emmerich, Tom Haller, Henry Herbst, Machelle Kennedy, Rose Kennedy, Tom Lenartson, Bill Miller, Gerry Miller, Virginia Lopez, and Sally Sharamitaro.
Minutes of Last Meeting - NMINUTES of the November meeting were read by Sally Sharamitaro. There were no corrections. Minutes were approved as read.
Nina Bryans will give Bob Corbett the name of the contact person at Missouri Historical Society (MHS). Bob has not received the digital images of the Muegge paintings as promised by the MHS.
Treasurer’s Report -Treasurer, Didi Gardner, gave the year end treasurer’s report. The ending balance was $4024.53, after expenses it was $3681.76.
Didi explained that because their were two returned checks in the past several months, she wanted to open a discussion of how the DHS might somehow recover the amount charged by the bank for returned checks. Following the discussion, a motion was made that the DHS charge a $10.00 fee on all future returned checks. A vote was held and the motion passed.
GENERAL BUSINESSThe scheduled dates have been approved by Bill Kennebeck at St. James School. These dates for 2005 are: February 20th; May 22nd; July 17th and October 16th.
The February 20, 2005 Event will be “Letters from Dogtown”. The program will include readings from two historical sources on Dogtown (with small bits of commentary added) Bob Corbett will do the readings and commentary.
The first half of the evening will be readings of Father P.J. O’Connor’s essays on social justice during the Depression. These essays grow out of the shock and dismay he felt at the suffering of his parishioners. The essays are well constructed and heart felt.
The second part of the evening, following the intermission, will be readings from the recently published book “Letters from Dogtown” written by Dogtown resident, Helen Scherzinger. She wrote a long series of letters to her daughter, Alice, who was working in a law office in Washington D.C. during World War II.
Suggestions for future events discussed at the most recent committee meeting:
The Speaker Series Committee last met October 6, 2004.
Bill Miller suggested that the DHS consider having just one mailing address. A Post Office box where all mail could be sent and/or returned. He said the cost would be approximately $45.00 per year and a member would have to be assigned to pick up the mail from the P.O. Box.
Didi offered as treasurer, to have her address printed on the membership letters and slips for now. She would email the documentation on each new or renewed member to Henry as she processed their dues. Henry would then update the membership file. The file is an Excel spreadsheet listing the members and their information. It was created by Nina Bryans and is maintained now by Henry as membership chairman.
Following the discussion of the Post Office Box, it was decided that the next time DHS stationery is ordered, a Post Office Box will be opened and the new Post Office address printed on the letterhead and envelopes.
Bill informed the group that the Century Home Committee has received its first complaint. The owner stated that the plaque was badly made and that there was a chip in it. Bill will check into it with the Company.
The video taken by City TV 10 of the Dedication of the Statue of the Boy and his Dog has been received by the DHS and will be kept with the other video holdings in the care of Virginia Lopez.
After a year’s negotiation with the Missouri Historical Society, photographs of the original Albert Muegee paintings have been acquired for the Dogtown Historical Society through the generosity of Duke McVey and Nina Bryans and were on display at the meeting. Albert Muegee is the son of August Muegee, both were portrayed in the recent DHS Civil War reenactment.
The photos, listed below, show scenes of Cheltenham during the 1870’s. The titles on the picures are:
None
Meeting adjourned 10:50 a.m. Next meeting will be December 11, 2004 at 10:00am in St. James Rectory, 6401 Wade Avenue.
