Nine members plus three guests were in attendance; Bob Corbett, John Corbett, Lucy Corbett, Tom Corbett, Tom Haller, Carol Nemeth, Ronald Schodrowski, Sally Sharamitaro, Joe Weisbrod and our guests; Terry Dougherty, Betty Halley and Adam Levi.

Treasurer’s Report – Bob Corbett presented the most current treasurer’s report. The current balance as of 5/2/10 is $3,525.97, of which $2,262.63 is in the bench project fund. The DHS acquired seven new members this quarter, possibly from the new Dogtown Motor Club. A motion was made and seconded to approve the treasurer’s report. A vote was taken, the motion passed and the treasurer’s report was approved

CURRENT BUSINESS

Archives/Donations- Bob gave a lecture at the April 2010 Meeting on Father Thomas Ambrose Butler, an early pastor of St. James the Greater Parish (1878-1884) who wrote two books of narrative poetry. And he announced that for the June meeting, there would be no lecture, but an open house at his home at 1419 Tamm, and he welcomes all DHS members and any guests interested to view the Dogtown archives organized, filed and stored in separate binders by subject; Schools, Churches, Sports, Businesses, etc..

Bench Project - No Report

Century Home Committee – Bob reported for Bill and Gerry Miller that it now costs $50.00 for each Century Home plaque. Because the price increase was unknown at the time the letters were sent to the most current 1910 home owners informing them about the Century Home plaques, those purchased will not include any funds for the DHS. The full $50.00 will need go to the maker of the plaques; the Tile Library Co.

Bill and Gerry are also concerned that the Tile Library may decide against making future plaques and that we may need to find a replacement plaque maker.

Ghost Sign Project – No Report

Living History Project – No Report

Membership – No Report

CURRENT BUSINESS

Soldier’s Memorial Project – Bob began the discussion by reporting that he received more Dogtown veteran names and will post the corrected/updated list on his website. He added that most of these additions seemed to be veterans who served and survived, none who died in combat.

John and Bill Waterhouse discussed the city permits and the monument. Bill informed John that the city needs the name of the Park and a drawing of the designated park area for the final approval process.

Discussion followed on the park, the memorial area and the landscaping around the memorial. Bob recommended that we go first to the Dogtown neighborhood before we contact a professional landscaper. Several names were suggested. Bob will follow up.

John’s hope is that the stone will be in place by Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2010 for the ceremony dedicating the park and the memorial

Street Musician’s Festival– John put together a plan for the First Annual Street Musicians Festival.

From his report:

Purpose:

  1. To celebrate the rich musical history of Dogtown
  2. To showcase the non-professional musicians in and around the Dogtown business district
  3. .
Plans include:
  1. An annual festival with prizes to be given for the best talent that day
  2. Judging to done by a celebrity group chosen by the festival committee
  3. A date set by DHS at meetings with the Dogtown Merchants Association
  4. A permit to be issued to the Dogtown Historical Society
  5. A Meeting held with St. James Parish Council re: school grounds, food, etc
  6. Attract, screen and notify musicians, and select the festival music
  7. DHS benches to be moved to specific locations for the musicians selected
  8. Festival times = 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Award ceremony= 5:30 pm
John has already started on the above list and has met with the Dogtown Merchants. The temporary date they set is September 11, 2010. However St. James Parish is having its 150th Anniversary that same weekend and feels that it would be too much to be involved in both events.

John says that the judges will not be difficult to choose, and that already some performers he spoke with are more than willing to perform at the festival.

Plans are also for the public, those that attend the festival, to vote for their favorite performers. Folks would put a dollar bill into an envelope with the performers name on it as their vote, then after the counting, the envelopes full of dollar bills would be given to those performers whose names are on the envelopes.

A lively discussion followed about the festival, the plans and the performers and it was at that time that our three guests joined us, representing the St. James Parish Council. They asked many questions and said that they would take their notes back to the Council who would be in touch with John.

NEW BUSINESS

Neighborhood Bulletin Board – John asked various members and neighbors where they thought the best location would be for a neighborhood bulletin board. He explained that he wanted to post such a board that would have a plexiglass cover and he wanted input on its location; Clayton and Tamm; West Park and Tamm, other?

Nothing has been decided at this time but John hopes to have one in place soon. Owners would be asked their permission, of course, before the board is posted. The plans are to post a board that would be large enough to accommodate several 8 ˝ x 11 sized meeting notices, menus, etc., on a nearby building where Dogtown neighbors could see it on their regular walks.

The meeting adjourned at 11:08a.m. The next business meeting will be Saturday, July 10, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at 1411 Tamm Ave, St. Louis, MO 63139
