FIRE AT CHELTENHAM

Evens & Howard's Fire-Brick Manufactory Partially Consumed

Yesterday morning about two o'clock the main buildings of the Cheltenham fire-brick works at Howard's station, Pacific railroad, caught fire and were entirely consumed, as no sufficient means of extinguishing the fire was accessible. An unsuccessful attempt was made to get the St. Louis fire apparatus out there. The buildings were heavy brick ones, and one was just being finished at a cost of $25,000. The loss was about $50,000, of which $22,500 is covered by insurance in the following offices: Commercial Union, London, $5,000; Lancashire, $5,000; Manchester, $2,500; Citizen's, St. Louis, $2,500; Atlas, Hartford, $2,500; Fire Assurance, Philadelphia, $2,500; St. Louis Insurance company, $2,500. The fire occurred from some woodwork being too near a fire. The buildings will be reconstructed in the most substantial manner, and with all the modern improvements, just as speedily as men and means can do it.
