Corbett's note: In putting this file into html, I did take the last three above from the list below and moved them up so that all the mines which could be classified in the Cheltenham/Dogtown area were so. However, this does mean that the numbers in this middle section do not quite correspond to Louis Schmidt's source.

"CLAY FACTORIES IN GRATIOT LEAGUE SQUARE"

(FROM THE HISTORY OF CHELTENHAM AND ST.JAMES CHURCH-- PG.8--) THE EXACT DATE OF THE FINDING OF CLAY AT CHELTENHAM IS NOT FULLY ESTABLISHED BUT PAUL M.? GRATIOT ENGAGED IN THE MANUFACTURE OF FIRE BRICK IN A SMALL WAY AS EARLY AS 1837. HIS WORKS WERE SITUATED ON KINGSHIGHWAY.

THERE IS EVEN EVIDENCE THAT HIS FATHER CHARLES GRATIOT MINED COAL. WHEN CHARLES GRATIOT RECEIVED THE SPANISH LAND GRANT OF GRATIOT LEAGUE SQUARE, HIS IMPROVEMENTS WERE A HOUSE, ORCHARD, GARDEN, "COAL MINE", SALINE AND MILL SITES. HE RECEIVED THE GRANT IN 1798. IT SEEMS TO ME, UNOFFICIALLY, THE CLAY WAS USUALLY FOUND A LITTLE DEEPER THAN COAL. (NOT VERIFIED). I HAVE YET TO RESEARCH THE ROCK QUARRIES, WHICH MUST HAVE BEEN VERY EARLY. MINING MUST HAVE BEEN FIRST IN THE MINDS OF THE LAND BARONS. THE FUR BUSINESS WAS THE MAIN FOCUS, BUT SOMEONE MUST HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT THE GROUND A LOT. MAYBE THE SULPHUR SPRINGS LED TO THE COAL, THEN THE GEOLOGISTS FIGURED IN THE CLAY. THEN AGAIN THE LIMESTONE QUARRIES COULD HAVE LED THEM TO THE COAL AND CLAY.

"REFERENCE AND CONTOUR MAP WITH LOCATIONS OF MINES".

  1. LACLEDE FIRE BRICK CO.#2 STARTED IN 1887--ABOUT 300FT. SOUTHWEST OF #1

LACLEDE FIRE BRICK CO.#3 STARTED IN 1902--BETWEEN WILSON AND RIVER DES PERES ABOUT 1910,LACLEDE CONSOLIDATED WITH CHRISTY FIRE CLAY CO. UNDER THE FIRM NAME OF LACLEDE-CHRISTY AND OPERATED THE PLANTS AT 4705 RIDGEWOOD AND AT SULPHUR SPRINGS.

JAMES GREEN HAD TWO SONS, THOMAS, WHO LIVED ON AN ESTATE IN THE 6100 BLOCK OF WEST PARK AVE. UNTIL HIS DEATH, AND JACK GREEN, WHO MANAGED THE BUSINESS AFTER THE RETIREMENT OF HIS FATHER. IN 1937 THE OFFICERS WERE J.L. GREEN-PRES. W.J. WESTPHALEN-VICE PRES. AND GENERAL MANAGER, AND J.N. BAGGOT-SECRETARY.

I HAVE FOUND A LISTING OF MINES,AND FOUND A LACLEDE-CHRISTY GRANDVIEW #17 MINE MAKING QUITE A LARGE HOLDING OF MINES AND FACTORIES.

THE LATEST DATE OF LACLEDE-CHRISTY MINING SEEMS TO BE 1948 (#4 MINE) AT COLUMBIA,SUBLETTE,WILSON,AND EDWARDS.

THE COMPANY OPERATED PLANTS IN 14 OTHER CITIES. IN ST.LOUIS ALONE IN 1904 THE COMPANY AVERAGED DAILY-642,000 BRICKS,OR 192,000,000 A YEAR. THE COMPANY EMPLOYED 1,050 MEN THAT YEAR.

  9. EVANS AND HOWARD FIRE BRICK CO.-- THIS INFO IS INCOMPLETE- EVANS AND HOWARD TOOK OVER FROM CHELTENHAM. I HAVE NO DATES EXCEPT CHELTENHAM STARTED IN 1855. FOR A WHILE THE NAME STAYED CHELTENHAM WITH EVANS AND HOWARD AS OFFICERS.THERE WERE THREE PLANTS THAT I KNOW OF--ONE AT N/E CORNER OF TAMM AND MANCHESTER, ONE ON THE SOUTHSIDE OF MANCHESTER AND TRACKS OF MO/PAC RAILROAD,WEST OF KINGSHIGHWAY WHERE THE TRACKS TURN AWAY FROM MANCHESTER, AND ONE PLANT WEST OF MACKLIND- EAST OF RIVER DES PERES BETWEEN NORTHROP AND PATTISON.

ONE PLANT THAT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN MISSED IS THE HIGHLAND FIRE CLAY COMPANY. I HAVE A 1920'S AERIAL PHOTO OF THE HIGHLANDS WITH THE CLAY COMPANY TO THE EAST. HIGHLAND CLAY IS LISTED AS MINES, BUT NOT AS A FACTORY. THE PLANT'S PROPERTY WENT FROM THE HIGHLANDS TO MACKLIND ALONG OAKLAND. BOTH THE PLANT AND THE AMUSEMENT PARK WAS OWNED BY ANTON STEUVER. IN THE RIGHT,BOTTOM CORNER THE PICTURE SHOWS ANOTHER LAND FILL AREA TO THE WEST OF THE AMUSEMENT PARK. THIS BECAME THE SITE OF THE ARENA BY 1929. THIS WHOLE AREA FROM MACKLIND TO HI-POINT WAS EITHER COAL OR CLAY MINES. STEUVER WANTED TO MINE INTO FOREST PARK, BUT WAS STOPPED.
