I came into this photo in a strange manner. I was at a presentation at Webster University and some of my friends were there who we sisters of Loretto. They had a guest with them. She too was a nun. We were introduced and I asked if she were a Loretto and she said no, she was a Dominican. I asked if she were from the Sparkhill Dominicans and she said, yes, why would I asked. I told her I was educated by the Sparkhill Dominicans. She looked at me very strangely and ask if I were Robert Corbett from St. James. It turns out she was Sister Loretta Butler, a theologian and scholar who taught her first of ten years of elementary school in 1944-45 at St. James when I was in kindergarten. She went on to get her PHD and is now a theological scholar. She sent me this photo
In her note with the photo she wrote: "This is probably the only photo I have kept from my
10 years at St. James. It was probably taken on Holy Thursday (procession) in 1945. You can see
you were the star of the show.
"It was really a surprise meeting you after more than 50 years. You have changed 'a little'
but so have I. Hope all is going well with you and your 'Haitians.'"
Sr. Loretta Butler, PHD, formerly Sr. Loretta Marie
Gwen Tresch suggests that this is probably when we were in first grade which would make it Easter of 1946 (we started kindergarden in Fall of 1944).
