BOB CORBETT'S FOREST PARK JOURNALS

Wildlife in Forest Park

September 15, 2003
By Bob Corbett

I just returned from my morning ride. I realize it's been more than a month since I've missed a single day of either walking or riding in the park. Today I rode.

I had four encounters with differed sorts of wildlife, two new for me.

  1. I saw the first chipmunk I've ever seen in the park. It was running down the drive way of Triple A golf course when I rode down there to see what it all looked like. Cutest little critter. It ran alongside my bike for 10 - 15 yards, then headed off into the bushes.
  2. Saw two birds that were of a type I'd not seen before. Larger than sparrows, but not quite as large as a starling. Dark color with a while ring around the neck. Anyone know what it is?
  3. I nearly hit a squirrel. I was flying along on a path, slightly downhill, and this small very dark squirrel was on the path, it seemed not able to decide which way to bail out and zig zagged. I was about to plunge of the path when it finally made a choice and just took off.
  4. I have HARD evidence that may even have stained my white Dogtown Historical Society long-sleeved tee-shirt forever, that geese are able to fly and defecate at the same time!

All in all it was a delightful couple of hours.
