I have categorized the picnic tables into four groups:
- Individual picnic tables -- for 1 to 4 people.
- private or seemingly private tables.
- difficult to classify tables
- group picnic tables -- clusters of tables for larger groups, with or without reservations.
If you know of other tables, or if tables disappear from these places, please let me know to help keep this page up to date.
Individual picnic tables:
TOTAL: 8 tables.
- Jewel Box Grounds: 3 tables. Separated. Old, rough but sturdy tables. Possible shade.
- Clayton Ave.: 2 tables. On the street, between the Jefferson Lake and Bowl Lake,
just as one is about to exit the park toward Barnes south parking lot. Newer tables.
- Missouri Historical Society Museum: 1 table. Next to parking lot, under tree. Old but sturdy table.
- By archery range: 2 tables. Between the archery range shooting area and bike trail close to Hwy 40. Old, warped but sturdy tables.
Private or seemingly private tables.
- Muny Opera practice space. Many tables. Inside covered fenced structure. It is often
locked, sometimes open. Group things are held there, and at times Muny seems to put some outside for an evening.
- Triple A Golf Course practice field. One table. Seemingly there for people who sit to visiti with golfers who are practicing.
- Triple A Tennis Club or restaurant. A bunch of tables, but may well be the backyard of the restaurant.
- Handball court. 1 table. Against handball courts, seemingly for players use.
- Art Museum -- 2 tables. Back side, against the building wall, Seemingly for art museum
employees for lunch space.
- By the "hatching lake" Many tables. Just as one is exiting park toward Kingshighway, north side. Sign says: no entry.
But there are about 8-10 tables by the lakes. Buildings of the park workers. I've seen
school groups there on numerous occasions.
Difficult to classify tables:
- At Mounted Police station. 3 tables together. Nice, new and very sturdy. Not clear if these are for public
use or police use. They are technically just BEFORE one enters the "keep out" area of the
mounted police, in the grass under a tree by the horse corral. I suspect these are for the police, but
also suspect no one would fuss were someone to use the tables.
Groups picnic tables.
I have found signs indicating 14 areas of public tables, all in clusters of many talbes. However,
I can't find groups 11 and 12. Each of these areas has many tables, usually 10 or more. All of these grounds also have
barbaque pits. Most have toilets close in the area. What I've found are:
- Grounds 1. Across from zoo, east side along Hampton Ave. Covered pavilon, lots of tables. Requires reservation permit and fee.
- Grounds 1A. A bit north of grounds 1. No pavilon. No permit. First come first served
- Grounds 2. Just a bit south of grounds 1. No pavilon. Permit required.
- Grounds 3. At the corner of Hampton Ave. and zoo, just off Hwy. 40. On northside, along
the bike trail. No pavilon. Two clusters of tables. Permit required.
- Grounds 4. Wells Drive, along south side of zoo, west of Tamm Ave. Many tables,
no pavilon.
- Grounds 5. Wells Drive, along south side of zoo, west of Tamm Ave. Many tables,
no pavilon.
- Grounds 6. Wells Drive, along south side of zoo, west of Tamm Ave. Many tables,
Pavilon.
- Grounds 7. Wells Drive, along south side of zoo, west of Tamm Ave. Many tables,
Pavilon.
- Grounds 8. Wells Drive, along south side of zoo, west of Tamm Ave. Many tables,
Pavilon. The cream of the crop. Brand new very large pavilon. Quite lovely.
- Grounds 8A. Wells Drive, along south side of zoo, west of Tamm Ave. Many tables,
no pavilon.
- Grounds 9. Wells Drive, along south side of zoo, west of Tamm Ave. Many tables,
no pavilon.
- Grounds 10. Wells Drive, along south side of zoo, west of Tamm Ave. Many tables,
no pavilon.
- Grounds 11 and Grounds 12 -- I can't find any with those numbers.
- Grounds 13. On Goverment Drive, behind the zoo, between zoo and art museum.
No pavilons. No toilets. Barbaque spaces. Lots of school groups here.
- Grounds 14. On Goverment Drive, behind the zoo, between zoo and art museum.
No pavilons. No toilets. Barbaque spaces. Lots of school groups here.
