    FIRST GENERATION

    6408 Brockschmidt Place in 1915
John and Kate Corbett, ages 33 and 31 one respectively.
Three Children: John (Red), 5, Bill, 4, and Charles (Rooster), 3

In the next year, 1916, my father, Bob, would be born there on Brockschmidt. And before they moved up to 6410 Wade Ave., Ed (Spider) would be born in 1918.

    MOVE TO 6410 WADE
    1920 or 1921

The last child was born to John and Kate when they lived on Wade. That was Catherine Corbett Moser, born in 1923.

There actually are two more "children," but they weren't born to John and Kate. Kate was born Kate Dwyer. She and her sister Liz married Corbett brothers, John and Jerry (Jeremiah) respectively. Their brother, Bud Dwyer had died in 1916 and his wife in 1912. They left three children, Randall (of White House fame), his older brother Dennis and a sister, Mary.

In 1916 Kate had all boys and his sister Lizzy had girls. They just took in Bud's children, with Kate taking Randall and Bud Jr. as their sons, and Lizzy taking Mary. Bud Jr. took off on his own before long, but Randall lived with the Corbetts until adulthood, and then settled in Dogtown to run the White House tavern.

My Aunt Catherine Corbett Moser told me that as a young girl she just assumed Randall was her brother. When her mother, Kate, was upset with Rooster she would yell at him in his full name, Charles Dennis. Thus when she heard her mother and others address Randall as Randall Dwyer, she just assumed those were his first two names like Charles Dennis was Rooster's first names.

One day a visitor mentioned to Catherine in front of her mother, that it must be nice to have five brothers. Catherine corrected her to say she had six brothers. Her mother explained to her that Randall was not her brother, but her first cousin. Catherine said she was very angry with her mother and didn't even believe her, thought she was kidding her.

It's a tricky business. There certainly were no "legal" measures taken. Neither the John and Kate family, nor the Jerry and Lizzy family formally adopted their brother's children. But, the children became integral parts of their family. Were they children or not? I tend to think they were.

Even as late as the 1960s when I was doing family history for the first time, I wasn't all all sure how Randall fit into the family, and just assumed he was my "uncle," rather than a second cousin.
