On the fourth of July when I was young
The stores all closed and the flag was hung
From every porch; ice cream was made
While we had picnics in the shade
Kinfolks stopped by, and friends we knew
We had firecrackers and spit-devils too
Then when it got dark we screamed with delight
As we ran waving sparklers around in the night
