The World Commission on Water for the 21st Century estimated the gap between 
the cost of tap water and water sold by vendors in several world cities and 
gathered the most recent data on the cost of water in several countries.

WATER GAP

Port-au-Prince, Haiti - 100 times as much for water from vendors.

Karachi, Pakistan - 83 times.

Jakarta, Indonesia - 60 times.

Cairo, Egypt - 40 times.

Dhaka, Bangladesh - 25 times.

Guayaquil, Equador - 20 times.

Lima, Peru - 17 times.

Lagos, Nigeria - 11 times.

Nairobi, Kenya - 11 times.

Tunis, Tunisia - 10 times.

Cali, Colombia - 10 times.

Abidjan, Ivory Coast - 5 times.

COST OF WATER - INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES

Canada - 31 cents per cubic meter.

United States - 40-80 cents.

Spain - 47 cents.

Ireland - 61 cents.

Sweden - 69 cents.

Italy - 70 cents.

Finland - 77 cents.

Britain - $1.28.

Netherlands - $1.30.

France - $1.35.

Belgium - $1.55.

Germany - $2.16.

Algeria - 27-57 cents per cubic meter.

Botswana - 28 cents-$1.48

India - 1-80 cents.

Madagascar - 39 cents.

Namibia - 22-45 cents.

Pakistan - 6-10 cents.

Taiwan - 25-42 cents.

Tanzania - 6-24 cents.

Uganda - 38-59 cents.
