#1999: Haitian authors (fwd)

Hello, 

I've been looking everywhere (New York Public Library, Haitian Library
in Florida, Etc.) trying to locate a book and I was hoping you might
have some info. My problem is I don't know the title or author but it's
a story about a prisoner and a prostitute and their relationship through
a glass wall as she comes to visit him. I believe it was written in the
1950's by a male author and is supposedly a classic book in Haitian
literary history. If this rings a bell, could you let me know.
