The fruit which I eat and enjoy in Haiti as a "chadeque" is known in
Barbados as a shaddock.  It's similar to but distinguishable from the
grapefruit.  Richard Allsopp's Dictionary of Caribbean English Usage
describes it as the largest variety of citrus fruit, Citrus maxima
(Rustaceae), and indicates that its Barbadian name comes from a Captain
Shaddock who first brought the seeds to Barbados, in the 18th century.  If
that's the case, then it seems likely to have been introduced to Haiti from
the English-speaking Caribbean, perhaps via Jamaica, where it is also known
as a shaddock.
