PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) - Gabriel Michel and Jean-Robert Menelas
scored three goals each Saturday as Haiti routed the Bahamas 9-0 in the
first leg of their World Cup qualifier. The second leg of the
home-and-home, total-goals series is April 16, with the winner advancing
to a third-round matchup against the Dominican Republic or
Trinidad and Tobago. Michel scored in the third, 16th and 57th minutes,
while Menelas connected in the eighth, 33rd and 68th. Golman Pierre
scored in the 29th and 37th minutes,and Vladimir Edouard got the final
goal in the 72nd. In Saturday's other game in the second round of
Caribbean Zone play, Barbados won 3-1 at Aruba. The winner of the series
plays Cuba or Suriname. At Oranjestad, Gregory Goodridge scored in the
second minute and Jenny Alexander connected in the 22nd and 85th. Wandel
Gross scored near the end for Aruba, which finished two men short
following the ejection of Carlos Geerman early in the first half Ichel
Lopez with two minutes remaining. The United States has a bye until the
semifinals of qualifying in the North and Central American and Caribbean
region, which start in September.
