Haiti electoral mission condemns killings
Washington, CANA - The Electoral Observation Mission
in Haiti sponsored by the Organisation of American States
(OAS) Friday condemned the murder of a political party
official and his wife. The coordinator of the electoral
campaign of the Patriotic Movement for National Rescue
(MPSN), Legitime Athis and wife were killed in Petit-Goave.
"The Mission affirms that such a murder, as well as all
the other violent incidents that have occurred during
the electoral campaign, are a threat to peaceful
elections as well as to democracy in Haiti," a statement
issued here said Saturday.
Protests in Haiti
Port Au Prince, Haiti, CANA - Parts of Haiti's capital,
Port Au Prince, are this morning in shambles following
protests yesterday that almost shut down the downtown
commercial centre. Street protesters who claim
allegiance to former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide
erected barricades of flaming tires at intersections
throughout the city. They called for general elections
and for the resignation of the Provisional Electoral
Council, and protested the rising cost of living.
