Dwight Yorke's goal helped Trinidad and Tobago move into the semifinals
of regional qualifying for the 2002 World Cup with a 1-1 tie against
Haiti at Port-Au-Prince on Friday night. The Manchester United forward,
who skipped early qualifying games to play for the English champions,
scored off a counterattack in the 24th minute as Trinidad and Tobago
held on to win the home-and-home, total-goals series 4-2. Dieufene
Delamour scored for Haiti with 17 minutes left. Trinidad won the first
leg 3-1 at home on May 7, with Yorke contributing one goal.
With its victory in the third round of Caribbean qualifying, Trinidad
advanced to the nation semifinals of soccer's North and Central American
and Caribbean region, where it will be grouped with Mexico; either
Honduras or Panama; and Barbados,Canada or Cuba.
Haiti faces either Honduras or Panama in a playoff for another
semifinal spot. In a meaningless Central America Group A game later
Friday night, Belize played Guatemala at Panama City.
El Salvador won the group and advanced to the regional semifinals.
Guatemala finished second and will play either Antigua or St. Vincent in
a playoff for another semifinal berth.
