MIAMI (AP) - Eight American missionaries injured in a traffic accident
in Haiti were flown by the U.S. Coast Guard (news - web sites) to
Florida for treatment at a local hospital Sunday night. Five were in
critical condition, said Scott Carr, a Coast Guard spokesman. The injured
were among 11 missionaries from Georgia, North Carolina, West Virginia
and Maryland involved in the crash on Friday, Carr said. One man was
killed, though Coast Guard officials didn't know his identity.
The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince said the group was in a truck about
18 miles west of the city when the truck went off the road.Officials
didn't identify what aid group the missionaries belong to but said they
were working on behalf of a U.S. church, Coast Guard Lt. Michael Gesele
said.
