From: bateyrelief@mindspring.com

Dear Friends,

We are happy to inform you that BRA has extended the conference registration
deadline to Feb. 18th so that you and your friends have the opportunity to
register and attend this historic event. The symposium date is still set for
Feb. 28th, 2001 from 3:30p-8:30p at the United Nations in New York City.

The Haitian and Dominican governments, and scholars will bring to light the
new reality about the Dominican's 220 bateyes where more than 1 million
human beings languish under questionable circumstances.

Your presence is crucial as you will have the unique opportunity to
challenge policies that may have been responsible for the chaotic living
conditions for thousands of Dominican and Haitian families. Your
suggestions will be important as to how we can continue working together
using our ingenuity and the rule of law to create a manageable environment
for those seeking a better life.

You will hear issues of poverty, migration, labor & rights. Speakers will
include award winning author, Edwidge Danticat - Executive Director of the
Dominican's State Sugar Council (CEA), Victor Manuel Baez - Consul of Haiti
in Barahona, Dominican Republic, Edwin Paraison - Dominican Scholar at
FLACSO, Ruben Silie - and Prof. Jacqueline J. Polanco at John Jay College of
Criminal Justice.

If you have not reserved your seat yet, please do so TODAY by contacting us
at (917) 627-5026 or bateyrelief@mindspring.com. A registration packet will
be sent to you immediately.

We look forward to seeing you. Happy Holidays!
