Port-au-Prince, 29 January 2001 -(AHP)- Sources close to the Police Nationale
d'Haïti (PNH) confirmed Monday that police officers detained two individuals
on Saturday in the vicinity of the the OPL office where the Democratic
Convergence held its States General meeting

These two had in their possession bags full of rocks and anti-Democratic
Convergence tracts.

According to these same sources, when the police wanted to take them away, it
was one of the leaders of the Democratic Convergence who intervened to
request their release.

For his part, the spokesperson for the PNH, Jean Dady Siméon, confirmed that
at least five individuals had been arrested by the police. Among these five,
at least three had been identified as members of a popular organisation close
to the Democratic Convergence.

In addition, the PNH spokesperson denied accusations made by the leaders of
the Democratic Convergence that some of their supporters arriving from the
provinces had been attacked. These accusations could not be confirmed, he
said.
