Haiti/Germany 1999 60 min. documentary in Kreyol and French
with English subtitles, Claudette Coulanges, dir. (director will
be present at screening.)
Looking for Life introduces the viewer to two women who have their
own particular ways of battling through life. One cooks and provides
lunches to factory workers in a factory yard in P-a-P, the other is
employed in the same factory making t-shirts. Everyday one buys
lunch from the other on credit.
This film shows the battle for survival these women lead as all in
Haiti. Beyond this the film demonstrates the extent to which the
importation of N. American manufactured goods has led to the
collapse of Haitian regional production.
[The film opens with the making of alumininum pots by hand (with
a mold,) in what looks like Cite Soleil. I have never seen this particular
enterprise in Haiti and found this fascinating.]
SCREENING WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A QUESTION AND ANWER SESSION WITH FILM
DIRECTOR AND A RECEPTION
