7585: Defending the King
>From Richard Morse:
"Many of the acts of cruelty attributed to Christophe, however, were
committed by his subordinates and without his knowledge or approval. The
unrest in his kingdom, too, was as much due to the intrigues and
machinations
of those in important positions as to his tyranny. These unscrupulous men-
members of the aristocracy, officials in the government, and army
officers-
had become jealous of his power and secretly awaited an opportunity to
overthrow the government. Although they owed their positions and wealth to
him, they resented his ascendency over them and they believed that they
rather than he should rule the country."
(Henry Christophe and Thomas Clarkson, A Correspondence, U. of California
Press 1952)
