7595: Re: 7585: Defending the King: Poincy comments (fwd)
From: "[iso-8859-1] Jean Poincy" <caineve@yahoo.fr>
It is not an objective defense of the King. For he
tacitly gave his approval by entrusting his
subordinates with unlimited power over the population.
It was politically rational or just considering the
circumstances in which he had to build a nation. The
people, all they dreamed of was to be freed from
working and to own pieces of land, a state of mind
Christophe's opponents, the mulattoes, had viciously
exploited in the western portion of the country with
the sole purpose of undermining the King's grip on
power. The mulattoes' strategy was Ayiti's curse and
it is the malignent tumor the country is suffering
from today.
Dr. Francois Duvalier's reaction to the resistance
against his government was no different from that of
Christophe, we could well use the same defense and
interpretation on his behalf.
Ayiti has lived, lives and will live.
