David, I agree with all your descriptions, but remember, the boucaneers
were on La Tortue LONG before captive were brought in from Africa.  And
remember the Spainish were also there with their own gory version of
werewolves, skin-walkers and the like.  The painter Goya reported this
tradition in several paintings and graphic series. It is interesting that
this set of beliefs seem to pop up all over the world in one version or
another.  Maybe is no boucaneers, no Spanish sailors, no Dutch merchants
and no African captives brought it into St.-Domingue-Haiti, it would have
arisen spontaneously,   like those horse hairs that turn to worms in
