7951: Import tariff hypocrisy (fwd)
From: Charles Arthur <charlesarthur@hotmail.com>
Keywords; 'free' trade, import tariffs, development.
According to a new study* by the United Nations Conference on Trade and
Development and the Commonwealth Secretariat, the United States, Japan and
Canada impose import tariffs on about 50 percent of the total value of
exports from the LDCs (Less Developed Countries - 49 countries of the
poorest countries in the world including Afghanistan, Haiti, Mali and
Uganda).
Does anybody else see the hypocrisy of the IMF, World Bank, and USAID
forcing Haiti to abandon its own import tariffs in the name of free trade?
* The study was released at a United Nations conference on the Least
Developed Countries in Brussels.
