World: Death toll in Haitian bus crash rises to 41

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (June 27, 2001 10:22 a.m. EDT) - The death toll in a
Haiti bus accident reached 41 on Wednesday after nearly two dozen
passengers died from their injuries. 

Nineteen people died at the scene of Tuesday's crash near St. Louis du
Sud, 80 miles southwest of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The bus, carrying
53 people, hit a ditch when it swerved to avoid a truck abandoned on the
road. 

Another 22 people died after being taken to local hospitals, Radio Tele
Metropole du Sud reported Wednesday. Police in nearby Les Cayes confirmed
the accident but have been unable to give details. 

Of the remaining 12 people on the bus, eight were seriously injured but
were expected to survive, and four were not hurt, the radio station
reported
