9532: The USA and Haiti - history written in blood (fwd)
From: Jean Saint-Vil <jafrikayiti@hotmail.com>
Onè list members,
While re-reading part of Michael Heinl' s «Written in Blood», I came across
the following statement which I find rather patriotic (to the U.S.) but
puzzling (to average Haitians). Knowing, that Professor Heinl is sometimes
on Corbetland, I would like to ask him or others if they could please
elaborate on the following:
«Quickly and correctly he [Duvalier] concluded that the United States which
had so often helped Haiti in the past, was the logical source of
replenishment». (pp 586 & 587 of Written in Blood).
I am particularly interested to find out what these numerous occasions when
the U.S. had helped Haiti are?
I also found puzzling the author's generally positive portrayal of the
foreign Catholic clergy. If Professor Heinl mentions the «rejeté» campaign
in the 900 pages of his book, somehow I managed to have missed it.
Am I alone in perceiving this particular kind of bent in professor Heinl's
account of Haitian history?
Thanks for your thoughts,
