Haiti gets help in AIDS fight
The Associated Press
December 5, 2001
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti · The Inter-American Development Bank will grant $1
million to Haiti's government to draft a national plan on combating HIV and
AIDS in the country, which has the Caribbean's highest infection rate.
The money will be funneled through the Pan American Health Organization to
provide technical assistance to the Haitian government in drafting the plan,
the IDB announced recently.
The HIV infection rate in Haiti, a country of 8.2 million, is about 5
percent.
The poor Caribbean nation has received $8 million this year from the
international community to combat the disease.
"We need at least four to five times more to begin to make headway," said
Dr. Eddy Genece, director of the non-governmental organization Promoters of
Zero-Objective in the Spread of Aids.
Most of the country's programs are devoted to prevention, such as education,
distribution of condoms and testing. There is no distribution of drugs and
little care for those already infected, Genece said.
