WORKSHOPS ON LIFE IN HAITI (in Wales in the UK)
An exciting link between children in Wales and Haiti is at the heart of a new project being developed in the Vale of Glamorgan.
Working in partnership on the initiative are the Vale Council’s Library Service and the authority’s arts development programme and the Haiti-Wales Educational Awareness Fund.
Through workshops in schools and libraries, Fund chairperson Phil Cope has been relating stories from Haiti and helping Vale youngsters discover the difference between their lives and those of children overseas.
The council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Tony Hampton, who visited a workshop at Dinas Powys Library, said: "I was delighted to hear children read to each other from ‘Except on Sundays,’ which is a first book produced by the Haiti Fund.
"The book, which was sponsored by the Community Fund, tells the story of a typical week in the life of a Haitian family. It has been produced in English, Welsh, French and Creole and is a valuable learning resource."
Another book is being produced as part of the ‘Digital Lives’ project and children will create poems, prose, photographs and drawings to illustrate their everyday lives and the culture in both countries. Ysgol Sant Curig and Oakfield – formerly Gibbonsdown– primary are involved in the project in Barry, and the material will be produced in a book to be completed in the spring of next year..
The first publication, ‘Except on Sunday,’ is available for sale from the Haiti Fund on (44) (0)1656 649466 and all proceeds go towards buying educational resources for children in Haiti.
