9998: US-Haiti (fwd)

WASHINGTON, Dec 17 (AP) -- The White House urged Americans living in
Haiti to remain in their homes Monday after armed commandos stormed the
National Palace in a failed coup attempt.
After the attacks, which killed at least two policemen and two
passers-by before police recaptured the building in Port-au-Prince, the
United States ambassador there reported to the White House that his entire
staff is safe, White House press secretary Ari Fleischer said.
The ambassador requested -- and swiftly received from local authorities
-- additional police protection for the U.S. Embassy and consulate,
Fleischer added. "The embassy is closed to the public today, following the
attack and the United States urges all citizens in Haiti to remain in their
homes today."
