The date for Carnival is Tuesday February 12, but the much more interesting, 
festive and safer carnival is the special one in Jacmel, which always happens 
9 days earlier, i.e. Sunday February 3 this year. It starts around noon on 
Sunday and goes on until the wee hours of Monday morning. Groups with 
fabulous papermache masks, streets packed with relatively well-mannered 
celebrators.
