The European Union asks Haitian authorities to "firmly condemn" violence
BRUSSELS, December 26 (AFP)
Wednesday, the European Union asked Haitian authorities to "firmly condemn"
acts of violence in Haiti against opposition leaders by pro-government
demonstrators during an aborted coup attempt.
The EU "strongly condemns the confused events that occurred during the
attack on the National Palace last December 17,” declared the Belgian
presidency of the EU in a communiqué. It also condemned "the violent acts
launched, in the capital and the provinces, by grassroots organizations.”
The European Union "unequivocally disapproves the acts of violence and
intimidation recently perpetrated, with impunity, against some members of
the media," says the communiqué.
The EU "formally asks the Haitian authorities to firmly condemn those acts
of violence and intimidation, to start the necessary judicial processes, to
reinstate order, and to guarantee fully the protection of life and
properties of all citizens, without distinction, as well as the entirety of
constitutional guarantees, the rule of law and legality, according to the
commitments established in the Cotonou Accord."
