Haiti Torn by Hope and Hatred As Aristide Returns to Power Washington Post

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- The death threat came in a chilling Creole
expression. Unless the opposition to President-elect Jean-Bertrand Aristide
backed off, righteous crowds would kill 80 of Haiti's establishment
politicians, journalists and clerics, turning their "blood to ink, their
skin to parchment and their skulls to inkwells."
"«PORT-AU-PRINCE, Feb 25 (IPS) -- Nervously speaking in a hotel room on the
outskirts of this capital, top Haitian journalists Guy Delva and Leopold
Berlanger do their best to explain just how dangerous life has become for
the free press here over the past two years".
I remember when Guyler C. Delva, rendered blan friendlier when referred to
as Guy Delva, capitalized on the reaction of the speech made by Paul Raymond
to wrest the leadership of the press association AJH. This speech, made by a
representative of a small contingent within the majority of Lavalas, was
greatly exaggerated by the Haitian press and then referenced and amplified
by the international news agencies. A case in point, having looked at the
video footage again nowhere can I find reference to the number "80" nor the
phrase "righteous crowds will kill....". The poetry of Dessaline was
certainly the worst of it and was quickly disavowed by many prominent
Lavalas leaders the very next day. The rest is pure editorialization that
was given creedence by the sheer weight of the number of times it was
reported and nothing more. Since then, provocation after provocation has
created the means to attach the mantle of self-fulfilling prophesy to the
poor majority of Lavalas in an attempt to render Aristide's presidency null
and void.
As with the sudden departures of Bob Manuel, Leon Manus, Olivier Nadal and
countless others whose net effect creates the image of dictator currently
being nailed to Aristide, it seems a matter of time before Mr. Guyler C.
Delva joins their auspicious ranks.
