One of the most beautiful projects I have been documenting is the literacy
program throughout Haiti. How can one describe the feeling of watching a
sixty year-old woman sucessfully graduating from an alfabetization class
along with her neighbor the ten year-old girl next door? Watching the bond
created between them at this event told me they would most certainly be
friends for life. How can one explain the committment of a 28 year-old woman
who is bright, intelligent, and unemployed taking her time to teach others
to read and write knowing she would not be paid. These are just a few
examples of what I have documented and experienced with the literacy program
in Haiti. No, it is not as dark as they would like us to believe.
