 Before we close that subject; one might be interested to hear a not so
personal opinion of the spelling of the name of my native country.
As a pre teen I attended a religious Catholic school in Port au Prince
adjacent to the Cathedral Notre Dame . It was known as Ecole Jean-Marie
Robert de la Mennaie directed by  Les Frères de l' Instruction Chrétienne.
    Better yet the School popular name was TEYAT which is Haitian Creole
means THEATER.  There, not only there were physical, sexual child abusers but
also MENTAL ABUSERS.
    Concerning the spelling of Haiti, it is to be written that way in French
: Haïti.
Note the central letter " ï " . Anytime a student forgets or avoid writting
that
way the whole class will be reminded by the Chè Frè [ Dear Brother ] why  it
is written that way. Etymologically, he explained , the word come from the
french
"Haïr" meaning to Hate and with the suffix TI which turn as Syen implying
Hate ourself ". One can understand what the Dear Brothers have tried to teach
us.
     Half of a century later I visit  the School  and shares with the
Principal
[ Frè Direktè ]  a so called haitian proverb underlined in one of their
booklet

                              " Fè nèg byen, se Bondye ou bat" ...
