Port-au-Prince, March 21, 2002 -(AHP)- The Taiwanese government, represented
by its Ambassador to Haiti Michel Lu, presented to the Haitian government
Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) on Thursday a check for
$362,000 toward the reconstruction of the Raboteau Health Center (Gonaïves).
The total cost of the project is estimated at more than $684,000. The check
from the Taiwanese government is in addition to a gift from the Netherlands
government of $322,400.
In his remarks on the occasion, the Minister of Public Health, Henry Claude
Voltaire, indicated that the project to rebuild the Raboteau Health Center
was part of a vast program of the government, designed to revitalize Haiti's
health care system.
According to Minister Voltaire, the reconstruction of this center is also
part of the project to upgrade facilities in outlying areas of the
Artibonite, serving a population of 300,000.
The Ministry of Health will be the beneficiary of technical assistance
through the Panamerican Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health
Organization (WHO), said the head of the MSPP, adding that the approximate
length of time required for the work, which is about to begin, is six months.
Taiwan's Ambassador to Haiti, Michel Lu, hailed the good state of health of
the bilateral relationship between Taiwan and Haiti in the area of health.
Michel Lu stated that it is his wish that the rebuilding of the Raboteau
Health Center shall be beneficial to the population of this densely populated
district of Gonaïves.
The Raboteau Health Center, out of service due to its advanced state of
disrepair, will be rebuilt on the same land, comprising 3,000 square meters.
The new center will have 20 hospital beds and will provide essential services
including an outpatient clinic, a maternity ward, a small surgery department,
related services (radiology, laboratory and dental services), urgent care
services and administration.
