HAITI: MIGRANT BOATS TURNED BACK The Coast Guard said its
crews had intercepted 244 Haitians on two dangerously
overcrowded boats and returned them to Haiti. It said the
35-foot vessels, packed with 101 and 143 people
respectively, were intercepted off the north coast of Haiti
on Thursday, trying to make the 550-mile voyage to Florida.
A cutter returned the migrants to Port-au-Prince. By
agreement with the Haitian government, the Coast Guard
intercepts and repatriates Haitians trying to enter the
United States illegally. More than 1,400 have been returned
to Haiti this year, surpassing the 1,391 in all of last
