a1542: Haitian and Creole writers need a philanthropist (fwd)
From: Nlbo@aol.com
I have been thinking of this idea for a while. The post on Children's books
prompted me to share it. There are a number of Haitian writers whose works
are collecting dust. I am not saying everything is publishable like many
poetries I see. However, I have seen a significant amount of valuable works
written by Haitians that the world should know about. The Haitian experience
be it fiction or non-fiction is usually told by North Americans and Europeans
for many reasons that will take too much time to get into.
When Haitians finally write, those who get published are the ones who write
about the darker side of Haiti like Edwige in her first three books. Though
middle class Haitians like Myriam Chancy publishes, if one is not in the
academia , you will not know about her. The Haitians who portray a brighter
experience of Haiti or Haitians's lives outside of Haiti have difficulties
getting published.
Is there a philanthropist , an organisation , or a network that can finance a
publishing company for Haitian writers, especially for those who write
essays, short stories, fiction and non fiction texts? Can universities get
funding for such project?
