a1660: Re: a1656: Spelling for Haitian religion (fwd)
From: E Vedrine <evedrine@hotmail.com>
This issue was raised at the HSA conference last year in Vermont. Haitian
researchers (in the field) can decide what they would like to adopt and or
just try to do the change through their writing. There's a parallel
discussion with the spelling the Haitian language over the past few years
(some native/non-native speakers want to call it "Haitian", "Creole",
"Haitian Kreyol". "Haitian Creole" is widely used in published documents and
100% of the people in Haiti call their language "Kreyol"). I don't know if
"majority" can still win all the time. Yves Dejean has published an
interesting article on that
(http://hometown.aol.com/mit2haiti/Dejean-AnnEtidye6.htm).
