"provocation"

According to President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the
political crisis is coming to an end. He made this
statement after a meeting yesterday with trade union
members at the National Palace. Aristide announced a series
of initiatives which he has undertaken to move the country
out of the impasse. Wendell Theodore reports as follows:

[Theodore - recording] The president of the republic
invites the nation to be patient. Aristide, who appears
calm, optimistic and sure of himself, is counting on a
series of points to initiate the process of ending the
crisis. The head of state believes the time of rejoicing
for all Haitians will come through dialogue without
provocation.

[Aristide] //Let us continue to accompany the OAS mission
which is in the country, the investigation which has
already begun. People should talk to each other and should
avoid falling into provocation. Do not cause provocation so
that others may not fall into it. Then there will be more
appeasement and more rejoicing. As civilized people, we
shall create a dialogue so that we can find a solution to
the political and economic impasse.//

[Theodore] The president of the republic talks of political
and economic unblocking. To announce the beginning of the
end of the political impasse, the head of state refers to
certain activities which he has initiated within his party.
These activities, he said, are important in the search for
a solution.

[Aristide] //All these things that I am doing now are good
and I must continue to do them. When one has been in prison
for a year and has only one day left before one is set free
then one should not be impatient.//

[Theodore] The Haitian president was answering the
questions of our correspondent, Romney Cajuste, on the
specific actions which he intends to take to facilitate the
resolution of the crisis. Meanwhile, the discussions
between the ruling party and the Democratic Convergence are
at a standstill.
