3 to Be Honored
By Haitian Group
aitian hero Toussaint L'Ouverture's talents as teacher,
builder and visionary are reflected in the honorees at this
year's Toussaint L'Ouverture Awards Ceremony in Brooklyn on
Saturday.
Haitian historian and author Jean Julien, Brooklyn Deputy
Borough President Yvonne Graham and Ulrick Gaillard of the
Community Action Project are this year's honorees at the
event at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, 200 Eastern Parkway
(at Washington Ave.), from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The annual awards ceremony — sponsored by the
Brooklyn-based 18 Mai Committee — celebrates Haitian
culture and history and the principles of L'Ouverture, the
leader of the Haitian independence movement who emancipated
slaves and briefly established Haiti as a black-governed
French protectorate.
