May celebrates Haitian culture
Art exhibits, a film festival, book readings and concerts are just some of
the activities lined up for May's Haitian Cultural Heritage Month
celebrations in South Florida. Kicking off today and sponsored by the
Haitian American Cultural Society, the events are designed to raise
awareness of the diversity of the local Haitian community.
The first event today is at FIU's Campus North and features a job fair at 10
a.m. and an 11 a.m. press conference with Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas
proclaiming the month. Other notable events include:
Exhibit of the works of Willer Fils-Aime at Banco Pacifico, 1409 Brickell
Ave., Miami, 6 p.m. Thursday
Haitian Film Festival movies Pour L'Amour de Suzie and La Pere de Mon
Fils, North Miami Senior Auditorium, 800 NE 137th St., North Miami, 6 p.m.
Friday.
French Poetry Reading and Discussion, Broward Main Library, 100 S. Andrews
Ave., Fort Lauderdale, 6 p.m. Saturday.
Splash -- New Wave in Haitian Art, The Living Room, 4000 N. Miami Ave.,
Miami, 6 p.m. Saturday.
Taste of Haiti Culinary Experience, 122 NE 47th Ave., Miami, 10 a.m.-6
p.m. Sunday.
Creole Cabaret featuring Tabou Combo, Millennium Ballroom, 1484 E.
Hallandale Beach Blvd., Hallandale Beach, May 12.
Compas music festival, Bayfront Park, Miami, May 18.
