a1913: Re: a1903: Haitian advocates, Rep. Meek meet to push for release of asylum-seekers (fwd)

From: kevin pina <kpinbox@hotmail.com>

"One woman says she was beaten and raped by a local leader of Haiti's
ruling Lavalas party after she campaigned for the opposition.

Another recounts being chased by a progovernment mob armed with
machetes.

A member of a religious group says Lavalas members shot at his house
after a journalist broadcast an interview in which he said Haiti was not ``a
true democracy.''"

Can anyone explain the process being used to corroborate these claims by
asylum seekers? It just appears strange to me that journalists following
this story are reporting these claims without background and corroboration
thus far.

It also seems peculiar that the underlying theme is that the Bush
administration is somehow protecting the Aristide administration by not
allowing these claimants immediate asylum in the United States. Perhaps this
"telegraphing", of granting asylum enmasse to these claimants of political
repression, represents the next "big move" by the Bush administration to
further isolate and damage the credibility of the Lavalas government.
