Bigelow, John. WIT AND WISDOM OF THE HAYTIANS This is not this very rare
book itself, but a xerox copy of it. I could never find the book. Finally,
in frustration I borrowed it on interlibrary loan, xeroxed the whole
thing, used a paper punch to put three holes and bound it in a binder.
Finally, however, I found the original of this 1877 very very rare book. I
am now offering my xerox copy (without the binder). It's quite an
interesting book.
$12.00
Bourne, Peter. BLACK GOLD.Many readers know Peter Bourne's more common and
famous novel of the Hatian Revolution -- Drums of Destiny, but few know
this much more scarce work, Black Gold. But again, Bourne takes us back to
Haiti of the revolutionary period to tell the story of "...Captain Thomas
Goodall -- a reckless seafarer of Napoleonic time who sought on the island
of Haiti what he missed so much on board." This is a hard bound copy of
this much sought after and scare work. Dust jacket and in excellent
condition. Published in England in 1964.

Christensen, Barbara. THE MAGIC AND MEANING OF VOODOO. 1977 Children's
book, hard bound, with drawings and text. Deals with Voodoo in several
places including the U.S., but focuses centrally on Haiti.
$8.00.
Cobb, Charles. HAITI AGAINST ALL ODDS. Article in National Geographic of
Nov. 1987. Whole magazine. Nice condition. This magazine is worth it for
the one spectacular aerial photo of the Dominican/Haitian border, with
green forests on one side and bleak deforestation on the other. Two other
articles in this issue. See Deagan below.
$5.00.

$16.00.
Cook, Mercer. AN INTRODUCTION TO HAITI. Very rare 1951 overview of Haiti.
I had this one on my "most wanted" list for 15 years and couldn't find a
copy, then found two copies in the same month! Well worn oversized
paperback. 150+ pages, photos, bibliogrphy and excellent material on
Haiti.
$50.00.
Courlander, Harold. THE BORDEAUX NARRATIVE. One of my favorite Haiti
books. This is a novel and Harold Courlander told me that after many years
of scholarly research he had a number of folk customs and legends
collected which he just couldn't published as scholarly reports since the
evidence was not strong enough. Yet he gave credence to these as common
beliefs in Haiti. So, in his senior years he wrote this road-story novel
to embody all these various legends. It is a marvelous read, and this is a
very fine copy in hard bound with dust jacket in a plastic cover.
$22.00.
Courlander, Harold. THE PIECE OF FIRE AND OTHER HAITIAN TALES. Put
bluntly: the best collection of Haitian folk tales ever assembled in
English. Courlander was a wonderful anthropologist and collected or
Haitian materials. This is a very nice ex-library book, clean and in dust
jacket and plastic cover.
$18.00.
Craige, John Houston. BLACK BAGDAD. Second of the famous hard bound books
which this military officer wrote during the American occupation in the
1930s. Craige's critique of Haitian people and culture set off a storm of
protest amoung liberals in the U.S. This is a beat-up of this scarce book
with no dust jacket, but full and solid text.
$33.00.
Craige, John Houston. CANNIBAL COUSINS. Famous hard bound book which this
military officer wrote during the American occupation in the 1930s.
Craige's critique of Haitian people and culture set off a storm of protest
amoung liberals in the U.S. This is a particularly nice copy of this
scarce book in full dust jacket.
$40.00.
Craige, John Houston, HAITIAN VIGNETTES. An amazing story and photo log
from a 1934 National Geographic Magazine. Craige, author of two notorious
books on Haiti, Black Bagdad and Cannibal Cousins, and a military person
in Haiti during the occupation, is the author. This is 51 page treatment
and includes 43 marvelous black and white photos and 13 color photos, when
color photos were more like drawings than photos. Some of these photos are
classic, and include a railroad in downtown P-a-P and a wonderful family
scene on the veranda of a gingerbread house. This is a quite scarce item
since National Geographics of this age are hard to find. This is the
entire magazine so you get the fringe benefit of such non-Haiti items as
an article on the stratosphere, and two studies of wild fowl and geese,
plus all the fun ads in NGs..
Quite nice condition copy for age. $32.00
Second copy: The magazine is whole, intact, worn, but text is intact and
fine. $28.00

STRETCH In the 1990s I published a magazine on Haiti. It was in part a
begging letter for my charity work in Haiti, but increasing in the 90s
began to offer book reviews, political analysis, new stroies and such.
Finally in 1994 I closed down the magazine and opened the Haiti e-mail
list on-line, which now has nearly 1200 subscribers. The magazine had 2500
subscribers and we used to print just a few extra, keeping costs low. Thus
these hand full of back issues are extremely rare documents.
Each issues is $7.00.

WARDS OF THE UNITED STATES. An unsigned story in National Geographic,
August, 1916. The article covers The Dominican Republic, Haiti and
Nicaragua. The section on Haiti is extensive and has 30 incredible black
and white photos of Haiti. One is extraordinary given the later art
revival in the 1940s. Most people are familiar with the famous photo of
Hector Hyppolite in front of his home, Ici Renaissance. This 1916 magazine
has virtually the same photo of a different artist in front of his painted
hut. It would be very hard for most to tell the difference! Other photos
include a great rural market, streets, cemetery and railroad in P-a-P,
arch in Les Cayes, forested mountains, rural tailor, statue of Dessalines,
a very unusual photo of the citadel and much more. A very difficult item
to find.
Nice condition $32.00.
