"L'Union fait la force"
Quelle Union?  Quelle Force?
The Haitian flag was created on May 18, 1803, to symbolize the union
between the class of Affranchis, or Freedmen, led by Gen. Alexandre Pétion,
and the masses of newly freed slaves, led by Gen. Jean-Jacques Dessalines.
Haiti celebrated its independence on January 1, 1804, and within two
years that historic union was split asunder by class antagonism.  Was the
"Union" just a tactical alliance to defeat the French?  Or was it a dream
that never  materialized?
